Treadmill

Measuring brain activity in awake and behaving animals is crucial for understanding sensory processing, cognition, and decision making. Our versatile belt treadmill and foam roller-based treadmill systems, available in various configurations, are well-suited for assessing locomotion and neuronal activity in awake behaving, head-fixed mice.

The belt linear treadmill consists of an easily cleanable polyester belt with a Teflon surface to minimize friction. The foam roller-based treadmill is lightweight, enabling easy movement by the animal. Its soft surface offers some flexibility, preventing the mouse from exerting strong forces against the headplate implant. Both treadmill systems are manually driven, featuring a compact design to fit under microscopes and digital input/output for synchronization with other data streams. The UltraTrak Treadmill features a 2-meter-long belt and an integrated automated reward delivery system. It accurately tracks the animal’s location and speed, ensuing precise and timely reward dispensing. The design maintains perfect belt alignment during long-term behavior and brain activity recordings.

The system employs a quadrature rotary encoder to monitor the movement of the belt, which is then decoded by an embedded controller for the calculation of both speed and accumulated distance. The speed reading is dynamically updated each time it changes. In cases where no changes in speed are detected within a predefined time interval (typically 50 milliseconds), the speed reading is automatically set to 0.

A USB connection is utilized to transmit digital data of distance and speed whenever a change occurs. This system allows for the customization of speed and distance calibration, as well as the output voltage to suit specific requirements.
