Behavioral assays to gauge an animal’s innate anxiety levels often utilize the approach-avoidance dilemma—conflicts arising from the drive to explore new environments and forage for resources (approach), while avoiding harmful threats (avoidance).
The Light-Dark Test and the Elevated Plus Maze Task are widely used to evaluate the anxiolytic or anxiogenic effects of transgenic or pharmaceutical interventions in rodents. Unlike some other anxiety assessment assays that expose rodents to harmful stimuli (e.g., electric shocks), these two assays rely on rodents’ innate preference for dark, enclosed spaces and aversion to heights and brightly lit, open areas.
Our LuminTrck Light-Dark Box (item # 06010) and Elevated Plus Maze (item # 06030) employ an infrared touchscreen frame for tracking animal positions. This system automatically records and analyzes animal behavior in a highly efficient, unbiased, and cost-effective manner.
